Does anyone know why some of the phase I cars came with headers and some didn't? Some pics of cars show headers some without?

It was an option (not standard with the 380hp). The Bobby Labonte Blackbird #38 has them.

NASCAR Long Tube Headers - an $1,800 option. (hard to see in the photo)

I see. My berger has them . Do you know if all the berger cars had them or if it was a special option? Seems to me that the ones with headers would have had more HP than the ones with out? thanks for your info Jim.

It was an option (not standard with the 380hp). Yes a little more HP - not sure how much. I'll bet Mike Carnahan would know. Might want to ask him the question. I can't tell the difference on the street. Jim

Really Jim ? :confusion-shrug: I would think that the difference would be "night and day" because the car can certainly breathe better now ! ! ! ! ! :auto-layrubber:

I did some research most say with long tube headers and free flow cats with a good cat back anywhere from 25-40 hp.

Let the bench racing begin............. Sure it breaths better but.............

If I was at the track I'd expect to see a difference. It's hard to tell on the street without any timing devices unless I'd line up a non header 380hp next to a header 380 car & run them side by side. There really isn't a reference point on the street- the cars are @ redline in no time.

It's no different from the Phase II & IIX cars on the street. A 380 with headers is not going to run like a Phase II/435 & a IIX/475 will be quicker than a 435. Yes the IIX seems a little stronger but it's hard to tell how much without the watch running.

I know what my Phase IIX (auto) SS #45 runs....... 9 runs on the 2009 HRPT on street tires (4 @ Union Grove & 5 @ Bristol) - just unloaded the stuff from the car & ran it. Fast run was 12.4 & slowest was 12.51 (about a tenth difference in 9 runs) - pretty consistent for an old guy. No one beat me in 9 runs on the HRPT & I think I was in the top 3 or 4 fast times. Remember this was a 5k mile road trip & a couple of the quicker times were trailered race prepared cars. There were a lot of guys 'talking the talk' that couldn't 'walk the walk'. See the Bristol run against the '57 Pro-street Ford Wagon.

With that said I'd put Berger SS #45 up against any other GMMG at the track & we can find out. Run 'what-you-brung'.......Road trip/ street trim - no tuning - no trailer queens - no race prepared cars - just take the stuff out of the car & run it.

Union Grove run ....

Bristol staging.........

Check the bottom of this link to see the consistency.........http://www.daytonapacecars.com/id16.html

The next year I ran PE #37 (Phase IIX) - 6 speed @ Newton Iowa on the Power Tour & times were all over the place with a 6 speed. I can't shift as fast an a automatic.

Bench race all you want guys................ The only way to know is line them up under controlled & timed conditions.
