Zl1 #7 - Hugger Orange @ Russo-Steele - 2014 Scottsdale

Autabuy link......... http://www.autabuy.com/Vehicles/Details.cfm?VID=913500

Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale January 15th 19th, 2014 at Russo and Steele's 14th Annual Scottsdale Arizona Auction. Please contact us for more information. Created by Matt Murphy in 1999 to build specially tuned Chevrolet high-performance cars that were emissions-compliant, modern versions of the famous dealer-modified Chevys of the 1960s and early 1970s, GMMG quickly forged an outstanding reputation. Focusing on the outstanding fourth-generation Camaro and Firebird, GMMG installed Chevrolet ZL-1 engines, upgraded suspension components and brakes to create a modern-generation supercar with durability, reliability, and modern technology. Clearly echoing the Baldwin/Motion, Berger, Dick Harrell, Fred Gibb, Nickey, and Yenko dealer-tuned Chevy supercars of the past, the GMMG Camaro was available through select Chevrolet dealers. A special Intimidator edition Camaro was available only through Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet as well. Just 69 Camaro ZL-1 Supercars were produced by GMMG, the same production number as the original 1969 ZL-1 Camaro program, which was spearheaded by LaHarpe, Illinois Chevy high-performance dealer Fred Gibb. All of the GMMG ZL-1 Camaros began as Code B4C Camaro Coupes equipped with six-speed manual transmissions, with the exception of 2 cars that were converted to automatic transmissions. The entire production run is reported to have been completed during March 2002. Three prototypes included Number 1 for GMs Chevrolet Motor Division, which commemorated the original Fred Gibb drag car. Prototype Number 2 was for Berger Chevrolet, and Number 3 was for Helen Gibb. The final car, Number 69, was built to honor Bill Grumpy Jenkins and his famous ZL-1 from 1969. In addition to the Z28 Camaros already-comprehensive features, the GMMG ZL-1 was also available with 69-style houndstooth upholstery, Penske 3-way adjustable shocks, and for 2002, optional Corvette Z06, Cragar SS, or Fiske wheels. Over 25 individual tweaks were made to the GMMG cars, covering everything from the powertrain and performance to appearance, with the accent on performance easy 11-second quarter-mile times with outstanding handling and braking to match. With fewer than 1,000 actual miles from new and fastidiously maintained, this 2002 GMMG ZL-1 Camaro is Car Number 7 of the 69 produced. As equipped, it is rarer still as one of the 31 cars equipped with the most-powerful Phase III engine available, being a Katech C5R unit. It is also one of the 28 Cragar wheel-equipped cars, one of the 8 with a 4.56:1 rear-axle ratio, and one of just 6 with the retro-style Hugger Orange and Black Houndstooth upholstery. As if all of those features were not enough, this ZL-1 is further equipped with a power-activated exhaust cutout mechanism just aft of the catalytic converter. Meticulously kept and stored in a temperature-controlled facility, ZL-1 Number 7 has received fluid changes regardless of the cars extremely limited use, and it remains, simply put, both an amazing performer and a fitting tribute to Chevrolets awesome high-performance legacy.

1969 ZL1 Camaro COPO 9560 #65 with COPO 9737

One of just 69 (plus two prototypes) of these special ZL-1 Camaros were ever produced and it is believed that less than 50 remain in existence today. This example was ordered and sold new at Lavery Chevrolet, Inc. of Alliance, Ohio. It is one of only three ZL1s equipped with the COPO 9737 Sports Car Conversion package. Factory features include radio delete, M21 4-speed, Black Standard interior, X44 Trim Code, and Fathom Green paint. This ZL-1 was a race car from day one and it is a former national record holder with extensive racing documentation. Full ownership history includes single ownership for the past 15 years under the consignor. It has never been offered for sale before. A certified original-body car with the original tags, it retains mostly original sheet metal and was restored with its period racing livery. A Multiple magazine-feature car, the ZL-1 was displayed at the Super Car Reunion and multiple Chevy/Vette Fest events. Complete with the original window sticker, other documents, and as-found photographs, it is a great example of the baddest purpose-built Chevy racing car ever created.

Well boys and girls....................I tried watching the auctions regarding these cars and.....................first................the cotton pickin' Mecum website went down Friday night and I couldn't watch the '02 Nickey ZL-1 go across the block and there has been nothing posted on the Mecum website so I "assume" that "possibly" the car got pulled from the auction and didn't go across the block.

The #12 Dale Earnhardt Intimidator SS DID go across the block Saturday morning (and I got to watch it because Mecum Infonet live streaming was up and working :D ) and it got to $30,000 but didn't sell. According to the Mecum website................it still hasn't sold.

I tried to watch the Russo-Steele auction in Scottsdale last night but their live streaming went down too...........but they have another function where you can at least see the bids being placed "live". On the #7 Hugger Orange '02 ZL-1........the bidding started out at $70,000...................then went to $75,000...............then went to $80,000.................then went to $85,000 and stopped. I "assume" the bidding didn't meet the reserve as I knew someone who was at the auction and he checked for me and the car DID NOT sell. "My personal opinion" is....................the guy who owned this '02 Hugger Orange ZL-1 should have sold it at $85,000 or at least lifted the reserve to see if it "might" have went a little higher as this particular car "probably" window stickered between $80,000 to $87,000 new and this car is now 12 model years old. He would have been out the seller's commission to the auction company and transportation expenses BUT................I really think that $85,000 was a good price and its probably not going to get any better than that..............at least at this point in time.

This same person who was at the auction and checked on the status of the "02 Hugger Orange ZL-1 above, had his 1969 Fathom Green ZL-1 there at the auction and the bidding on it started at $25,000..........then went to $250,000...............then to $275,000................and then went to $350,000 where it stopped. I didn't check with him to see whether it sold or not (as I thought that might be impolite/improper of me to ask him) so I "assume" that it didn't sell because it was at a Mecum Auction 6 months or so back and got up to $410,000 and didn't sell.

THANKS FOR POSTING THIS INFO J.D.! DEI #12 IS ALREADY BACK ON E-BAY FOR 38,500 OBO. GOOD POINTS ABOUT THE ZL1. I THOUGHT IT WOULD GO HIGHER. VERY FRUSTRATING TRYING TO FOLLOW ALL THESE AUCTIONS! MECUM SHOULD HAVE STAYED ON VELOCITY! KEEPING UP WITH BARRETT JACKSON WAS FUN AS WELL. DIFFERENT CHANNELS ON THE SAME DAY. FOX SPORTS 1 FOR PART OF THE DAY AND THEN LATER IN THE DAY FOX SPORTS 2.

ZL1 #60 bid to $95k - no sale - bid goes on.

Mecum gets a huge 'black-eye' & an 'F' from me for the Esquire Channel coverage. The cars & text was blurry & picture quality was poor. I found it very hard to watch & shut it off. I was most upset waiting for ZL1 #60 - waited till the end & then it never was on TV. Fortunately I caught the live feed.

As soon as they were on NBC Sports & it was great.

I also am thinking that a number of Richard Barry's Collection did not meet the reserve & were not sold. What do you think?

My 2 cents. Jim

Here was their reply when I complained......

We are delivering the broadcast in HD, and the crew is the same as its always been in the past. DirecTV is downgrading the signal on Esquire, and it is out of our control. Feel free to email DirecTV and express your disappointment in the broadcast quality in hopes that your feedback will change how they choose to output the resolution of Esquire.

Our new television agreement is with NBC Sports Network, not Esquire. Velocity was only wanting to air 4 auctions a year for 2014 and beyond, so we simply had to execute other opportunities. When the agreement was finalized with NBC Sports, there was not enough air-time available to broadcast all of it on their network for the Kissimmee auction. NBC affiliate, the Esquire Network happily agreed to supplement broadcast hours from Kissimmee in an effort to bring Mecum into more homes for more hours during the largest collector car auction of the year.

There are segments being broadcast on NBC Sports Network next week and will be broadcast in HD. Here is a link to our Kissimmee TV schedule. We hope you can tune in during these segments to see that the quality of our show is as good or better than ever.
