Great question............. There have been a number of thoughts on this.
Someone must know or have documentation from back in the day.
George Murphy Motor Group ??? - I always thought it was this. I am wrong.
Greg Murphy Motor Group ??
Many years ago I heard General Motors Marietta George - also incorrect.
Do you know for sure? Please add to this thread.
Greg(G), Matt(M), Motorsports (M), Group(G).

I ran into Rick George a few years ago and asked him directly if he was the first "G" in GMMG. He said...no. That contradicts what an ex-employee of GMMG told me though?
I've also seen GM Motorsports Group used before like Dennis mentioned.
My favorite is what most GMMG employees said it stood for jokingly....Go Matt Murphy Go!

Greg(G), Matt(M), Motorsports (M), Group(G). A Greg who I never met and Matt Murphy were partners before GMMG actually took off. It was also a play on being affiliated with GM. That is what Matt Murphy explained to me back in the beginning of our business relationship.

I still recall my conversation with Matt Murphy asking what GMMG stood for and him telling me “nothing“ . .
A long time mystery that can only be answered by Matt himself. Sure hope he is doing OK.
Thanks for sharing.
